Recap of Sept 7th’s meeting :)

September 10th, 2012

Hey guys!

Here’s what we did on our last meeting (sept 7th) in case you missed it!

We talked about these questions:

1)What does SDATA mean to you? – teach and learn, -make friends, -allow us to come together as a community, -increase awareness

2)What would you like to get out of SDATA? -see above

3) Do you have any ideas for activities you’d like to do? -bake sale, -monthly awareness, – work with PRISM

Then the more official ones-

1) What is the purpose of SDATA? -see first question

2) Is it fulfilling its purpose? – a little too early to tell, but we’re getting there

3) What are the strengths/weaknesses of SDATA? -strengths: solid principles/ weaknesses: funds (multicultural center??)

4) What changes need to occur for your club to be more successful? see weaknesses

What do you think? Feel free to let us know!

Then we played two truths and a lie! Super fun! We’ve got some interesting members 🙂

Finally, we had Joe’s presentation of Craniofacial Awareness month

If you’re interested in more info, you can go to ccakids.org or you could ask Joe! He also has flyers and posters and pamphlets.

Have a fantastic week and see you Friday at 4pm in the Red Room (above the nest)

Please consider posting disability-related articles to our blog

September 5th, 2012

If you have a umwblogs account, you can post right to the blog; if not, send me the link, and I will get it up for you.  I’ll also start compiling links to all such submissions up above under ‘Articles of Interest’ so that they are readily accessible long after they scroll too far down the rolling conversation on the homepage.

Here’s a link to an interesting piece on growing up with an autistic sibling from yesterday’s Washington Post!

Help Us Plan To Celebrate World Usability Day

(dis)Ability @ UMW hopes to organize an event (or a series of events) to celebrate World Usability Day on November 8, 2012.  You may find WUD’s homepage here.  Also, read Peter Monaghan’s “Design for Disability” 2010 Chronicle article here.

Please send any ideas you might have about how we might acknowledge the importance of this day on campus to Dr. Sally Scott (sscott2@umw.edu ) and/or Dr. Chris Foss (cfoss@umw.edu ).  Thanks!

Here’s an article that is getting talked about on our higher ed and disability listserv.  I’m curious what kinds of reactions folks here have to this idea. http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/design-architecture/dyslexie-font-designed-to-help-dyslexics-read-write/4110

El Orfanato (The Orphanage)

February 16th, 2012

Professor Lewis from the Department of Modern Foreign Languages would like to know if anyone was able to go to the Spanish movie last Monday, El Orfanato (The Orphanage), which had some interesting themes about disabilities. Although it wasn’t meant to address the topic of disability specifically when it was chosen as the Spanish film, it does go to show that “disability” is all around us, and is seen differently in different cultures.  Thoughts?
